I AM…

April 22nd, 2010 -

“I AM…BORED!” by Nicola Christoffersen

Graduates who are new to the working world often face difficulties in adjusting to the work environment.  During the adjustment and learning phase, it is natural to feel nervous; particularly while the work-load is low.

During these times, they key is not to get disheartened.  One of the biggest challenges faced by new employees is a feeling of boredom.  Boredom can simply be a mis-communication between employer and employee.  Like any relationship, expectations need to be made clear from the outset.  From the first few days in a business, both parties need to be clear about what they each expect from the other.

If you are new to a company, the first thing to demonstrate is a positive working attitude.  Attidue is everything.  Many skills can be taught, and employers will enjoy teaching a willing participant.  The “go-getter” is likely to receive extra investment from an employer, often because they are vocal about their needs.  Proactivity is key.

ProGrad have placed thousands of graduates over the years and we’re graduate employers ourselves.  “Graduates require constant stimulation and fresh challanges.  I don’t believe they get bored easily, however they do require some clear goals to achieve.  More importantly than that, there needs to be a level of reward upon achieving those goals”.  Davinia Noble, General Manager, ProGrad Pty Ltd

“Most employers recognise the value in recruiting young talent into the workforce, and are willing to invest heavily in the long term development and success of those individuals.  That said, it is essential that candidates are being proactive in driving their own careers.  Boredom is unacceptable in the workforce.  If you’re bored, then change it.  Take initiative, speak to your manager and set new personal and professional goals.  Take a proactive and positive approach to changing the way you feel in the office environment”, Davinia adds.

Here are a few tips if you want to kick boredom in the workforce:

1) Be proactive and organise a time to meet with your manager to ask for more responsibilities

2) Set clear and defined goals to achieve and allocate time frames in which you would like to achieve them

3) During face to face meetings with management, approach them with clear, well considered plans which you would like to achieve.  Most employers will be impressed by these actions and will assist to prepare something more formal ongoing.

4) Don’t dwell on it.  Boredom is an attitude.

Worldwide graduate struggles?

March 17th, 2010 -

More statistics have been released to suggest that graduates are going back to university to study again. This is due to the lack of positions available for graduate students in the workforce. Australia is not the only country that has been effected with the lack of positions available for graduates, the UK are also very aware of this situation.

You can view the article and stats here.

ProGrad aim to rectify this mind set as we offer our services to find graduates positions in the workforce and corporate scector!

Boredom can kill you!

March 15th, 2010 -

Have you got the boredom disease? It’s quite common in the workforce. I have read many blogs about employees bitching how bored they are and I even came across an article that said boredom increases heart problems and quickens death.

But have you ever thought that boredom is a curse you overcome just by being proactive? Maybe it’s time we all took our mothers advice, when we were young complaining of boredom, THERE IS PLENTY TO DO!

Here are a few tips if you want to kick boredom in the workforce and live that little bit longer!

Be proactive. It’s time to take your dear mothers advice. If you feel like you have run out of things to do in the office, ask for more. I’m sure your boss would love to offload some work and it will also give you brownie points in “taking initiative.”

Lack of motivation can also contribute to boredom. Ways to combat this can be to find inspiration about what you do or in the colleagues around you. Set yourself goals and give yourself rewards when you have reached these goals. For example: If you finish a particular task in time shout yourself lunch or speak to that guy/girl that you have always wanted to.

Give yourself variety. Instead of focusing on one set task for hours, start something else and come back to it. This way each task will be fresh and new.

Make the work enjoyable! Find something to be excited about and look forward to in the workplace. If you like going to work, chances are you will like the work and it will be a more enjoyable experience all over.

Teamed with these tips and a willingness to improve and seek out new tasks, you will succeed in beating the boredom bug!

Social workplaces

March 15th, 2010 -

Many regard the social aspect of the workplace as very important – especially graduates, as many have said a great working environment is in their top 3 most important things in the workforce.

But is it affecting your work? Where do your priorities lie?

There are many other things that you can do to socialise with work people instead of abandoning your work and talking up a storm. Go and do social things together – like going out for work drinks on a friday night or make sure you attend social events that work may hold.

Don’t let the social aspect of work effect your performance in your role!

Part 5 of the ProGrad journey – The assessment days

March 8th, 2010 -

Here at ProGrad we hold assessment days for a pool of high calibre graduates that have been fortunate to pass our telephone interview.

Prior to my position at ProGrad, I attended one of the assessment days. Palms sweaty and my heart beating in my ears, I decided to take the opportunity that was presented to me and it proved worthwhile. Not only did I secure a job with ProGrad, but I also learnt some valuable hints and tips about how to conduct myself in the workforce and business realm.

Now I am thankful to say I am on the other side and involved in running the assessment days. Personally, I think the assessment days are very valuable to any graduate and can help immensely when looking for a job.

Here are some things that I took away from ProGrad’s assessment day:

- You have the opportunity to source out your competition
- You learn some valuable things about how to conduct yourself in an interview
- you get to enjoy the experience with others
- You have the opportunity to build your network
- You get to broaden your knowledge
- You receive some much needed advice about how to build your resume!

Training to get you through

March 3rd, 2010 -

When graduates get placed through us, we offer them training in their first year. This is very beneficial as our graduates find they are more confident stepping out in the workforce.

Here is some feedback from Rebecca who has attended our training modules:

“I found ProGrad’s training modules really helpul. I think it’s a great idea. It’s not as overwhelming when you step into your job on your own. It gave me confidence.”

The dreaded JOB HUNT

March 3rd, 2010 -

When I finished University, friends who finished previously to me told me to expect to go through at least 20 interviews. I was dreading going out into the workforce, especially after seeing my friends rejected time after time and the effect that it was having upon them.

However after going through ProGrad I received the job the first interview I went to! And now I actually work for ProGrad.

Some of you graduates out there may have had the same experience as many of my friends and are at the end of themselves. It is always important to never give up and be that proactive graduate.

ProGrad is Australia’s leading assessment, placement, and training company and we are here for you! If you would like to know more about us and our services visit our website at: www.prograd.com.au or you can contact Nicola directly on (02) 8235 8300

Effective presentation techniques

February 23rd, 2010 -

Here at ProGrad we hold ‘ProGrad assessment day’s’ where graduates have the opportunity to attend and receive valuable hints and tips when stepping out into the workforce.

Before the assessment days we ask our candidates to prepare a 3minute speech. Below are a few tips on how to effectively give a presentation, even while your palms are sweating and you are feeling queasy. If you apply these tips no one will even know you are packing it on the inside.

* Be confident! This is key in any presentation. Even if you are nervous just pretend you are confident you would be surprised how much of a difference this makes.

* Have conviction. Believe in what you are saying. This way you sound credible and can persuade your audience.

* Body language is important. Do not sway when you are speaking, but take on a confident stance. Hand gestures can be used in the execution of your speech.

* Use eye contact. The worst thing you could do in a presentation is read off your notes. Although having palm cards is good in a speech as it can assist you and makes you look well prepared on the day, they should only be used as a guide. To really connect with your audience eye contact is essential.
