The socially savvy ProGrad graduate

February 9th, 2010 -

Good news is that graduates are becoming more socially savvy then ever before. An artcile by Human Capital Magazine reveals that two in three Generation Y’s are screening their online presence before they embark on the job hunt. This is a smart move as many employers are looking at job candidates on their personal social sites. So make sure you leave your profile on private!

ProGrad’s handy online tips:

  • Create a seperate FaceBook, YouTube, Flickr and Twitter account for just work purposes. Here include things that will be relevant in the area you are interested and applying for jobs in.
  • Put “work” on the end of your name e.g. Pro Grad work. This way your friends will know to stay away from that site as it is professional.
  • Keep these sites on public so that the potential employer can browse through them, but make sure your personal profiles are still on private!
  • If you’re not already on LinkedIn it is a good idea to start an account. You will find that most employers are present there and it is a good idea to add their company before you go for an interview.

Apply these tips and you will avoid the awkward introduction to your potential employer when they have seen all the photo’s you were tagged in on that big night out.
