Set yourself apart

March 1st, 2010 -

An interview can be fairly daunting, especially when you are up against hundreds of other applicants. Know the secret to setting yourself apart from the group, and be the one that everybody wants.

Be smart in an interview. Prepare a research portfolio prior to the interview including your knowledge about the company and the role you are applying for.

Think in an interview – what is unique about you that you can bring to a company? What can you do for them that will set you apart and benefit the company further than just the role you are applying for.

However just saying that you have an open personality that can get along with everyone will not secure you the position.

Think creatively. Read BRW and other material relating to the business realm and take what is in the latest news and what you have read what companies are looking for at the moment.

For example: The latest BRW newsletter features an article about search engine optimization and how every company wants to be on the first page of Google.

Do your research! Find out what kind of things Google favours (this is easy look it up on youtube) so you have the ability to do it for a company if need be.

The next step is just to SELL! SELL, SELL, SELL yourself! Let the company know that you have the ability to get them on the first page of Google.

This is what is going to set you apart from everyone that brings their same personable skills to any interview.

GOOD LUCK!

Prograd update: The buzz around google

February 10th, 2010 -

At ProGrad we know the importance of keeping up with technology. Not only have we been brought up with technology but we know how ProGrad graduates can use their tech savvy minds to their own advantage.

Entering the workforce with so much online knowledge can only benefit an organisation and potentially get you hired over that 40-something year old who has never even heard of Facebook.

ProGrad would like to keep you informed on the latest in the online social realm, and what we have stumbled accross is Google Buzz.

Google Buzz is Google Inc’s version of Facebook. It is developed through Google’s Gmail and it is here that people can post updates, similar to twitter, but choose if they would like to share it with the rest of the world or with a select number of people.

Google Buzz also has a mobile phone application and already teamed with google chat, it mirrors both Twitter and Facebook. Both with which ProGrad are a part of.

Will you get on board with this new social phenomenon?

Stick around to hear feedback from ProGrad on how easy and useful Google Buzz actually is as I will try and construct my own Google Buzz site and post you the updates.
