Signing on the dotted line…

February 9th, 2010 -

When asked to sign the dotted line on a contract agreement it is important  to read what you are signing first!

After signing a contract with a particular gym for a ‘free’ weekly pass, a couple of weeks later I started receiving debt collection letters informing me that I have not paid for my gym membership.

I thought I had just signed up for a free weekly pass but apparentley if I did not inform someone at the gym after my ‘free’ week that I did not want a membership then I was locked in for a year.

So, like I learnt, it is important to read the fine print for any contract you are required to sign.

“The first requirement is that there is an agreement, and any written contract should ensure that the agreement is clearly expressed and identified and that the parties intend them to be legally binding,” says Julie Clarke, co-author of Contract Law: Commentaries, Cases and Perspectives (Oxford University Press, 2008).
